OUR STORY
ABOUT THE MARKETS
The Denmark River Arts Markets are a community-centred celebration of creativity, place and connection, held by the picturesque backdrop of the Kwoorabup River in Berridge Park.

They showcase handmade arts and crafts, locally grown produce, freshly prepared food, and all day live music & entertainment and creative expression.
The markets prioritise quality, originality and integrity — valuing work that is made, grown or cooked by the people who sell it, and fostering a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.

At their heart, the markets stand for community over commerce, collaboration over competition, and sustainability in practice. They provide a platform for local makers, growers, performers and small businesses, while supporting environmental responsibility through waste reduction, reuse initiatives and public education around sustainable choices.
More than a place to buy and sell, the Denmark River Arts Markets are a place to gather — to linger, listen, meet, celebrate and feel the distinct creative spirit of Denmark.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

Originally called "Denmark Arts Markets", the Markets were first founded in 1982 by Andre Steyl and a group of community members, marking not only the beginning of the markets themselves, but also the birth of Denmark Arts as organisation which stewarded the event for 40 years.
From their inception, the markets were envisioned as a cultural meeting place — a space where creativity, community life and local economy could intersect.

For over four decades, the markets became woven into the fabric of Denmark, drawing locals and visitors to Berridge Park and earning a reputation as one of the town’s most cherished events. When the markets were paused in 2022, their absence was deeply felt, and calls for their return continued.

Their revival honours that original vision — carrying forward the values, ethos and community focus that shaped the markets from the beginning. While rebuilt for the present, the Denmark River Arts Markets remain rooted in their origins, continuing a legacy of creativity, connection and place that has defined Denmark for generations.
